Sāṅkhya Yoga · The Yoga of Knowledge

Arjuna takes refuge, and Krishna begins: you are not the body — act with evenness, and become steady in wisdom.

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Krishna rebukes Arjuna's faintheartedness; Arjuna, unable to decide his duty, becomes Krishna's disciple and asks for what is surely good, yet still says 'I will not fight'. Krishna's teaching begins with the distinction between the body and the embodied: the one who dies is not you, so there is no ground for grief (11–30). He then removes Arjuna's fear of sin by pointing to his own duty as a warrior (31–38). Next He introduces samata through karma-yoga: your right is to action, never to its fruit; evenness is yoga (39–53). Arjuna asks about the person of steady wisdom, and Krishna describes how such a one speaks, sits and moves (54–72).

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

Swamiji points out that the Gita's teaching starts with the difference between body and embodied, because a seeker who wants his good must first know 'who am I'. Discernment (viveka) is needed on every path — karma, knowledge or devotion — and Sankhya is where discernment is foremost, which is why Krishna begins His teaching with it and the chapter is named Sankhya-yoga. Arjuna's grief comes from lack of discernment; so that is where the cure begins.

2.7

I am Your disciple — teach me

Confused about dharma and overpowered by weakness, Arjuna asks for what is decisively good for him and takes refuge in Krishna as His disciple.

2.13

Like childhood, youth and age — so is a new body

As the embodied one passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so it passes to another body; the steady one is not deluded by this.

2.47

Your right is to the action — never to its fruit

You are free in doing your duty, never in its fruit; do not become the cause of the fruit, nor be attached to inaction.

2.48

Evenness itself is Yoga

Giving up attachment, staying even in success and failure, established in Yoga, do your work — for evenness is called Yoga.

2.55

Drop every desire, content in the Self

When a person completely gives up all desires that come into the mind and is content in himself, by himself, he is called steady in wisdom.

2.62

The chain of fall begins in thought

Dwelling on objects breeds attachment; attachment breeds desire; and when desire is obstructed, anger arises.
