What is Krishna saying?
Arjuna thought fighting was sin and not fighting was dharma. Krishna, calling him 'Partha' to remind him of his heroic mother Kunti's message, tells him plainly that refusing to fight is not righteousness but unmanliness. By birth and by nature this does not suit him. Swamiji reads 'kshudram' two ways: this weakness makes one petty, and it is itself a petty thing — easy for a hero to throw off. Krishna has no doubt about Arjuna's duty, so He ignores his hollow arguments and simply commands: stand up.
Step by step
- 1
What Arjuna called righteousness ('I am virtuous, I will not sin by fighting') Krishna calls weakness of the heart.
- 2
'Stand up' means: perform the duty that has come to you.
Why it matters
Weakness often hides behind noble-sounding reasons; Swamiji shows Krishna refusing to be misled by them.

2.31Look at your own duty too — do not waver

Even considering your own duty you should not waver, for nothing is more beneficial for a kshatriya than a righteous war.
