I cannot tell which is better

na caitadvidmaḥ kataranno garīyo yadvā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ।

English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniWe don't know which is meritorious for us, to fight or not to fight, nor do we know, whether we shall win or they will conquer us. The sons of Dhrtarastra, by killing whom we do not even wish to live, are arrayed against us.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारArjuna admits he cannot decide whether fighting or not fighting is better, nor who will win; he does not wish to live after killing his kin.
What is Krishna saying?
Krishna's words keep working on Arjuna, deepening his doubt about his own decision. Now Krishna's view (fight) and Arjuna's view (do not kill elders) stand equal in his mind, and he cannot choose. He is not doubting his own strength but the future, which no one can know. And even victory seems empty: if his kinsmen die, he would only live on in grief and the pain of separation.
Step by step
- 1
This verse marks Arjuna's shift from certainty to genuine doubt — a necessary step before asking for guidance.
Why it matters
Admitting 'I don't know what is right' opens the door to real inquiry, which comes in the next verse.
