What is Krishna saying?
Swamiji explains that there is an action-department (karma-vibhaga) and a fruit-department (phala-vibhaga). Doing is in human hands, because the human birth alone is given for new action; what happens as result comes from past karma and is under the Lord's dispensation. So a person is free in action and dependent in results. The verse has four parts: your right is to action; never to the fruit; do not become the cause of the fruit (by owning body, mind and senses as 'mine'); and do not cling to inaction, since laziness and heedlessness bind just as much as desire for fruit.
Karma-vibhaga — in your hands
- Doing your present duty, one action at a time, wholeheartedly
- New effort (purushartha), which shapes your future
- Making good use of whatever situation comes
- Whether or not to tie yourself to the fruit
Phala-vibhaga — not in your hands
- The result itself — its dispensation rests with the Lord
- Favourable or unfavourable circumstances arising from past karma (prarabdha)
- Changing the situation you have been givenप्राप्त परिस्थितिको बदलना
Step by step
- 1
Human beings are free in action but dependent in results — yet completely free to connect or not connect with the fruit.
- 2
We are bound less by doing than by the desire to enjoy the result; when that desire goes, doership goes too.
- 3
Every action is done with materials and people from the world, so wanting its fruit for oneself is not honest.
- 4
Use a pleasant situation to serve others; use a painful one to give up the desire for pleasure.
Think about itविचार कीजिये
Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तOne action, many hoped-for fruits
The word 'phaleshu' is plural because we do one action but want many fruits from it: merit, fame, people thinking well of us, respect, and so much money.
Arjuna can only do one duty now
As a Kshatriya, Arjuna has many duties — fighting, giving charity and more — but in the battle at hand he can perform only one: fighting. That is why 'karmani' is singular: at any moment, one duty is before us.
The tree with fire in its hollow
A tree with a fire burning in its hollow cannot stay green; it dries up. So too, one who carries the fire of attachment inside cannot find peace.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींexams
Preparing honestly for an exam, and giving the paper your full attention, is your action. The paper's difficulty, the evaluation and the rank are the fruit-department. The verse does not say 'don't care' — it says do your part fully and don't tie your inner state to what you don't control. Nor does it allow skipping the preparation because results are uncertain.
work
You can build the project carefully and help your team; whether a manager notices, or you get the credit, lies outside your hands. Wanting the credit for yourself, when the work was done with others and with resources given to you, is the very 'dishonesty' Swamiji points to.
Why it matters
It frees effort from anxiety: all your energy goes into the action, and none into worrying about what was never yours to decide.
