The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारSeeing Arjuna overcome by faint-heartedness and tears, Krishna begins to speak words meant to shake his mistaken resolve.
What is Krishna saying?
The same Arjuna who had asked Krishna to place his chariot between the armies, eager to see who dared fight him, now sits in the chariot with his bow slipping, body trembling and eyes so full of tears he cannot see. Sanjaya describes this with wonder: a man whose nature was 'no helplessness, no retreat' has been seized by attachment to family. Swamiji notes that the word 'vakyam' (these words) is added to show how extraordinary Krishna's speech will be: it strikes directly at the evil of abandoning duty that had come dressed as righteousness, and awakens in Arjuna the longing for his own true good.
Step by step
- 1
Attachment to family (moha) can overwhelm even the bravest; the change in Arjuna is sudden and total.
- 2
Krishna's words are aimed at the fault of giving up duty that had disguised itself as dharma.
Why it matters
The Gita begins where a capable person is paralysed by attachment; Krishna's teaching is addressed to exactly that state.
