Karma Yoga · The Yoga of Action
No one can live without acting — so act for others, free of attachment, and know desire as the real enemy.
What is happening here?
Arjuna, still set on not fighting, finds Krishna's words mixed: if understanding is higher, why push me into terrible action? Krishna answers that there are two paths, but no one can remain without action even for a moment, and renouncing action outwardly does not bring perfection. Action done as yajna — duty for the good of others — does not bind, and it keeps the wheel of creation turning. The realised, like Janaka, and Krishna Himself keep working to set an example. Actions are done by the gunas of prakriti; only the ego says 'I do'. Krishna then gives His own view: offer all actions to Me and fight, free of desire and 'mine'; better one's own duty, even imperfect. When Arjuna asks what drives a person to sin against his will, Krishna names desire, born of rajas, and tells him to slay it.
Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों
In chapter 2 Krishna praised evenness of intellect and also told Arjuna to act. Swamiji explains that because Arjuna held on to his own insistence on not fighting, he could not grasp Krishna's intent and the words seemed contradictory — a listener who holds his own view cannot fully take in the speaker's meaning. So Arjuna asks for clarity, and chapter 3 gives the fullest account of karma-yoga in the whole Gita, which is why it bears that name.

Action done for others does not bind
Actions done for oneself bind; actions done as yajna — duty for the good of others — free. So act, without attachment, for that.
3.19Do your duty, always unattached
Therefore, constantly free of attachment, do well the work that is your duty — by acting without attachment a person attains the Supreme.
3.27Nature acts — the deluded ego says "I am the doer"
All actions are done by the gunas of prakriti; one whose mind is deluded by ego assumes, 'I am the doer.'
3.35Better your own duty, even imperfect
Your own dharma, even if it seems lacking, is better than another's done well; death in your own dharma brings good, another's brings fear.
3.37Desire is the enemy
Desire, born of rajas, is what drives one to sin; blocked, it turns into anger. Insatiable and most sinful — know it as the enemy.
