What is Krishna saying?
Swamiji explains that desire is neither in the Self nor really in the mind: it comes and goes, while the Self always remains, and even in the mind it only arrives ('manogatan'). Because we identify with body, senses, mind and intellect, we assume these passing desires are ours. Renouncing desire means dropping this false assumption. The prefix 'pra' and the word 'sarvan' mean not a trace of any desire should remain. Then contentment is not something practised; it is the Self's natural state, and the intellect becomes steady on its own.
Step by step
- 1
Only what is not ours but has been taken as ours can be renounced. Desire is exactly that.
- 2
There are two kinds of contentment: contentment as a quality of the inner faculty, and contentment as one's very nature, which is always present and needs no practice.
- 3
As long as a trace of desire remains, one is a seeker; when desire is wholly absent, one is perfected.
- 4
The Gita values steadiness of intellect (firmness of aim) over stillness of mind; stillness of mind would even stop the karma-yogi's duties.

A craving to post and be seen arises, then fades within the hour. You were there before it came and after it left. That passing wish was never 'you' — this is the point Swamiji makes about desire.
Why it matters
Steadiness is not manufactured; it appears by itself once we stop claiming passing desires as our own.
