Chapter 2 · Verse 5
Better to beg than to kill my teachers
gurūnahatvā hi mahānubhāvān śreyo bhoktuṃ bhaikṣyamapīha loke।
hatvārthakāmāṃstu gurūnihaiva bhuñjīya bhogān rudhirapradigdhān॥ 5॥
English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniBetter to live on alms in this world, than to slay these noble elders, because after killing them we could enjoy only blood-stained pleasure, in the form of wealth and sense-objects.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारArjuna says even living on alms is better than killing his noble elders and enjoying pleasures stained with their blood.
What is Krishna saying?
Krishna's words are beginning to work, so Arjuna now speaks less heatedly. He weighs both sides: not fighting may force him even into begging, forbidden to a kshatriya, yet that seems less wrong than killing his gurus. Fighting would only win him wealth and pleasures stained with blood — not liberation, not peace. Swamiji points out that Arjuna has misunderstood: he thinks Krishna wants him to fight for a kingdom, whereas Krishna wants his ultimate good. Arjuna's view is still material, caught in family attachment.
Step by step
- 1
Evil that comes looking like evil is easy to remove; evil disguised as good is very hard to remove.
- 2
Arjuna's abandonment of duty came dressed as non-violence and dharma, so he could not see it as a fault.
- 3
As long as the physical view dominates, the spiritual view does not awaken.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तRavana and Kalanemi in saints' robes
Ravana came before Sita, and the demon Kalanemi before Hanuman, both dressed as holy men — and even Sita and Hanuman could not recognise them. In the same way, Arjuna's fault came disguised as dharma.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींcareer
Avoiding a hard but rightful responsibility and calling it 'staying true to my values' — the avoidance is hard to spot because it looks like a virtue.
Why it matters
Swamiji warns that our most dangerous mistakes are the ones we believe are good.
