Chapter 2 · Verse 4
How can I fight those I should worship?
kathaṃ bhīṣmamahaṃ saṅkhye droṇaṃ ca madhusūdana।
iṣubhiḥ prati yotsyāmi pūjārhāvarisūdana॥ 4॥
English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniO slayer of Madhu, and slayer of foes, how shall I fight Bhisma and Drona, with arrows, on the battlefield? Both of them are worthy of our worship.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारArjuna protests: how can I shoot arrows at Bhishma and Drona, who are worthy of worship?
What is Krishna saying?
Stung by Krishna's rebuke, Arjuna replies with some agitation. 'This is not cowardice,' he says, 'cowardice would be fear of dying — I fear killing.' He names the two main bonds in the world, birth and learning: Bhishma is his grandfather by birth, Drona his teacher by learning. Even addressing them disrespectfully would be like killing them, so how could he fight them intending to kill? Krishna has killed demons and hateful enemies, Arjuna argues, but these are elders of noble conduct who love him.
Step by step
- 1
Arjuna sees his withdrawal as dharma, not cowardice — this is the heart of his confusion.
- 2
Elders may strike him, he feels, but he cannot strike those who deserve service and worship.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्त'I am your father's father'
Arjuna recalls growing up in Bhishma's lap. As a child he would call him 'Father', and Bhishma would lovingly reply that he was his father's father. The memory shows how deep the bond of birth is.
The teacher who favoured his pupil over his son
Drona taught both Arjuna and his own son Ashvatthama to launch the Brahmastra, but taught only Arjuna how to withdraw it. For Arjuna, this is the depth of the bond of learning.
Love and reverence are real, yet here they are being used to justify leaving one's duty — the knot the Gita will untie.
