I am new to the Gita

Nine short steps through the heart of the Gita as Sadhak Sanjivani explains it — from Arjuna's confusion to the teaching of liberation.

  1. 1

    Why is Arjuna confused?

Seeing his own family on both sides, Arjuna is overcome; Swamiji traces his grief to 'mine-ness' (mamata) towards his kin, from which grief, worry and fear arise. Unable to decide what is right, he becomes Krishna's disciple and asks for what is truly good (2.7).

  2. 2

    Who am I?

Krishna's teaching begins with the difference between the body and the one who has the body. The body keeps changing and passes away; the self is never born, never dies and remains the same.

  3. 3

    What is my duty?

In the Gita, dharma means duty. Swamiji explains that whatever you take yourself to be — student, worker, parent, seeker — its duty is your svadharma, and doing it without desire is better than another's duty, however attractive.

  4. 4

    How should I act?

Your right is to the action, not its fruit; the result is under prarabdha. Action binds only when done for oneself — done as yajna, for the good of others and without attachment, it leads to the Supreme.

  5. 5

    Why does attachment cause suffering?

Taking 'I am the body' and 'the body is mine' makes perishable things seem important, and attachment follows. Dwelling on objects leads to attachment, desire, anger, delusion and loss of discernment; desire is never satisfied, like fire fed with ghee.

  6. 6

    What is equanimity?

Remaining even in success and failure, gain and loss, honour and insult — this samata is yoga. Swamiji says it must be kept throughout the work, not just at its start, and even a little of it protects from great fear.

  7. 7

    What is knowledge?

Swamiji defines knowledge simply: seeing your own existence as separate from the body; seeing them as one is ignorance. Nothing purifies like this knowledge, and the one with faith who attains it gains supreme peace at once.

  8. 8

    What is devotion?

Devotion begins by changing one's sense of 'I': 'I am God's and God is mine.' What is one's own becomes dear and the mind turns to it naturally; God looks for love, not ritual, and accepts even a leaf offered with love.

  9. 9

    What is liberation?

Swamiji teaches that liberation is natural and bondage is made — it comes not from giving up things but from giving up desire. Krishna's last teaching is to take refuge in Him alone: 'I will free you from all sins; do not grieve.'
