devotionLoving devotion to God, as a path and as an end in itself.
Editorial overviewGita layer: Sadhak Sanjivani

In simple words

Bhakti means devotion — a relationship of love with God, expressed through prayer, song, service, remembrance and surrender. It is open to everyone regardless of learning or social status.

What is it?

Bhakti derives from a root meaning 'to share' or 'to partake'. It appears in the Shvetashvatara Upanishad and becomes central in the Gita, where Krishna invites devotion from anyone. From around the 6th century CE the Tamil Alvars and Nayanars, and later poet-saints across India, made bhakti a mass movement in many languages. Bhakti is plural: Vaishnava, Shaiva and Shakta, with God worshipped with form (saguna) or without form (nirguna).

Scholar’s note

Ramanuja understands bhakti as continuous loving meditation, akin to knowledge, culminating in prapatti (refuge). Gaudiya Vaishnavism, drawing on the Bhagavata Purana, develops a theology of devotional emotion (rasa), with prema as the highest goal. The Narada and Shandilya Bhakti Sutras define bhakti as supreme love. Scholars debate how far bhakti movements challenged caste hierarchies.

How its meaning differs

Editorial overview
Each tradition in its own terms. None is ranked.
Vishishtadvaita Vedanta

Bhakti is sustained, loving meditation on God, supported by knowledge and action; for many, surrender (prapatti) is the direct means.

Dvaita Vedanta

Devotion, grounded in knowledge of God's supremacy and one's dependence, is the essential means to liberation by His grace.

Advaita Vedanta

Devotion to a personal God purifies the mind and is valued; in its highest form it becomes indistinguishable from knowledge of the Self.

Bhakti traditions

The poet-saints often treat devotion as the goal itself, higher than liberation — love for its own sake.

Shaiva Siddhanta

Devotion to Shiva, together with ritual and grace, frees the soul from its bonds; the Tamil hymns of the Nayanars are foundational.

Sikh philosophy (Gurmat)

Loving devotion to the formless One through remembrance of the Name (naam simran), without images or ritualism.

In the Bhagavad Gita — as Sadhak Sanjivani explains it

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Swamiji says the seeker should first change the sense of 'I': 'I am God's and God alone is mine; I am not the world's and the world is not mine' (18.65). Just as a disciple says 'I belong to my guru', or a bride takes her new home as her own, this change of 'I' makes spiritual practice easy and natural (18.65). What is one's own is naturally dear, and the mind goes where there is dearness — so the mind turns to God by itself (9.34, 18.65). God's worship needs no elaborate rules or special things, only love and belonging, as a child climbs into its mother's lap without any procedure (9.26). For those who worship Him with undivided devotion, God himself brings what they lack and protects what they have (9.22). Through undeviating devotion one even goes beyond the three gunas (14.26).

9.22

I carry the welfare of those devoted to Me alone

For those who think of God alone and stay constantly united with Him, God Himself provides what they need and protects what they have.

9.26

A leaf, a flower, a fruit, water — offered with love

God does not need elaborate materials or rituals; whatever simple thing is offered with love, He accepts — indeed He eats it.

9.34

Be Mine: mind on Me, worship Me, bow to Me

Become God's devotee, fix the mind on Him, make every act His worship, bow to His every dispensation — so surrendered, you will reach Him.

12.8

Place your mind and intellect in Me — you will dwell in Me

Set the mind and intellect on God and you will know that you already dwell in Him — there is no doubt about it.

12.13

No ill-will toward any being, friendly and compassionate — such a devotee is dear to Me

The realized devotee bears no hatred, is friendly and kind to all, free of mineness and ego, and even in pleasure and pain.

14.26

Unswerving devotion carries one beyond the gunas

One who serves Me with unswerving devotion goes beyond the three gunas and becomes fit to realise Brahman.

18.65

Be Mine: mind, worship and bow to Me, and you will come to Me

Be My devotee, fix your mind on Me, worship Me, bow to Me; you will come to Me, I promise, for you are dear.
