Yajna
yajña
In simple words
Yajna originally meant a Vedic fire ritual in which offerings are made. Later it came to mean any action done as an offering for the good of all, not only for oneself.
What is it?
Yajna is the central Vedic ritual of offering into fire, understood as maintaining the relation between humans, gods and cosmic order. Purva Mimamsa made the correct performance of such rites the core of dharma. The Gita widens yajna to include every action done without selfishness, lists many forms of it (offerings of wealth, austerity, breath, study, knowledge) and places knowledge as the highest. Later traditions internalise yajna further as devotion, service or meditation.
Scholar’s note
In the Vedic Brahmanas, yajna is a precise ritual technology; Mimamsa explains its efficacy through apurva, an unseen potency produced by the rite. Gita 3.9–16 describes a cycle of yajna sustaining the world, and 4.24–33 lists varieties, with 4.33 ranking jnana-yajna above material offerings. Tantric traditions develop an inner (antar-) yaga. The Jain and Buddhist critiques of animal sacrifice shaped the later ethical reinterpretation. How its meaning differs
For Mimamsa, the Vedic injunctions to perform sacrifice are the very content of dharma, and a correctly performed rite yields its result through an unseen potency.
In the Vedic hymns and Brahmanas, sacrifice sustains the cosmos and the relationship between humans and deities; it is bound up with rta, cosmic order.
Advaita sees ritual as purifying the mind, preparing it for knowledge; the Gita's image of offering, offerer and fire all being Brahman (4.24) is read as the vision of the knower.
Devotional traditions reinterpret sacrifice as loving offering to God, even of a leaf, flower, fruit or water.
Early Buddhist texts criticise animal sacrifice and redirect the idea toward generosity and ethical conduct.
Tantric traditions develop an inner sacrifice in which the elements of worship are visualised and offered within the practitioner's own awareness.
In the Bhagavad Gita — as Sadhak Sanjivani explains it
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारSwamiji states that in the Gita all duty is called 'yajna' — business, a job, studying and teaching done as duty are all yajna, and whatever is done to give happiness and do good to others is action for yajna (3.9). Actions done as yajna quickly dissolve attachment and do not bind, while actions done for oneself bind (3.9). At creation Brahma made human beings together with their duties, saying: by this you will prosper, and by supporting one another you will attain the highest good (3.10). What remains after such selfless work is yoga, equanimity — the 'remnant of sacrifice' that frees from all sins; those who cook only for themselves eat sin (3.13). The whole range of yajnas described in chapter four falls within Karma Yoga, and for the one who acts for yajna all karma dissolves (4.23, 4.24).
Where it appears in the Gita
Action done for others does not bind
Actions done for oneself bind; actions done as yajna — duty for the good of others — free. So act, without attachment, for that.
18.46Worship Him through your own work
By worshipping, through one’s own work, Him from whom all beings arise and by whom all this is pervaded, a person attains perfection.
