The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारEven the beginning of evenness is never destroyed, it never backfires, and even a little of it protects from the great fear of birth and death.
What is Krishna saying?
Here Krishna praises evenness. Even the longing to attain it is its beginning, and that beginning is never lost, because the longing for what is real is itself real. Rituals done with desire can backfire if some detail goes wrong, but the practice of evenness cannot, because it contains no desire for a result. Every other good deed is used up once it gives its fruit, but whatever evenness has come into one's life stays permanently and serves only one purpose — liberation.
Step by step
- 1
The sincere longing for evenness is its beginning — and that beginning is never destroyed.
- 2
Only the human birth is the opportunity to remove unevenness; other births are for experiencing results.
- 3
In the Gita's view, evenness ranks higher than a concentrated mind: concentration can bring powers, but evenness brings liberation.
- 4
A little evenness is complete because it is real; a great fear is incomplete because it has no real existence.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe servant, the friend and the broken lantern
If a paid servant drops and breaks a lantern, we get angry. If a friend who wants nothing from us drops it, we say, 'Things break in my hands too — no matter.' So too, one who acts with desire can suffer a reverse result, but one who wants no result cannot.
The traveller who stops on the way
A traveller who halts or falls asleep on the road does not get sent back to where he started; the distance covered stays covered. Likewise, whatever evenness has come into life is never lost.
One matchstick for a mountain of cotton
You don't need a huge fire to burn a huge heap of cotton; one matchstick is enough, and the cotton itself turns into fire. In the same way detachment is the fire and the world is the cotton — a little real detachment is enough.
The ritual that backfired
Someone performs a sacrifice to gain a son, but a flaw in the procedure brings the opposite — even a death in the family. Rituals done with desire carry this risk; the practice of evenness does not.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींself-growth
Suppose once, when criticised in a meeting, you stayed inwardly steady instead of reacting. Even if you lose your temper the next week, that moment of steadiness is not cancelled. Per this verse, whatever evenness has truly come in stays.
Why it matters
It removes the fear of 'I'm not perfect, so why try?' — every sincere step towards evenness counts permanently.
