Jnana

jñāna

knowledgeLiberating knowledge — seeing reality and the Self as they are.
Editorial overviewGita layer: Sadhak Sanjivani

In simple words

Jnana means knowledge, but in spiritual contexts it means direct, transforming understanding — not information about the Self, but knowing it. Some traditions say this knowledge alone frees us.

What is it?

Jnana ranges from ordinary cognition to liberating insight. The Upanishads prize knowledge of the Self as the way beyond death. In Advaita, jnana is the only direct means of liberation, since bondage is ignorance. The Gita calls knowledge the greatest purifier, compares it to a fire that burns actions to ashes, and lists humility, non-violence and steadiness as marks of knowledge. Theistic traditions tie jnana to devotion.

Scholar’s note

Advaita's sadhana chatushtaya (fourfold qualification) and the triad shravana–manana–nididhyasana (hearing, reflection, contemplation) structure jnana yoga. Theories of knowledge (pramana) differ across schools and are separate from salvific jnana. Ramanuja argues that the knowledge the Upanishads prescribe is itself meditation of the nature of devotion.

How its meaning differs

Editorial overview
Each tradition in its own terms. None is ranked.
Advaita Vedanta

Knowledge of oneself as Brahman is the sole direct means to liberation; action and devotion prepare the ground.

Vishishtadvaita Vedanta

Liberating knowledge is continuous meditation on God, and ripens into devotion; knowledge alone, detached from bhakti, is not enough.

Sankhya

Discriminating knowledge of purusha and prakriti ends bondage.

Nyaya

True knowledge of the sixteen categories removes false cognition, leading step by step to release from pain.

Jain philosophy

Right knowledge is one of the three jewels, together with right faith and right conduct; the liberated soul is omniscient (kevala jnana).

In the Bhagavad Gita — as Sadhak Sanjivani explains it

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Swamiji explains that taking one's own existence and the body as separate is 'jnana', and taking them as one is 'ajnana' (5.16). Ignorance is removed only by honouring this discernment, not by effort or labour, because labour keeps one's connection with the body alive (5.16). Nothing in this world purifies like this knowledge, because when the independent reality of the world falls away, all faults and sins end (4.38). One who has faith, is devoted to practice and has controlled senses gains this knowledge and at once attains supreme peace (4.39). Knowledge learned without practice only strengthens identification with the body (13.11), and merely verbal knowledge can take a person down further than action does (5.2).

2.16

The unreal has no being; the real never ceases

The unreal has no existence and the real never ceases to be; the seers of truth have seen the essence of both.

4.34

Learn it by bowing, asking and serving

Know that knowledge by prostrating before, serving, and sincerely questioning the wise who have realised the truth; they will teach it to you.

4.38

Nothing purifies like knowledge — and karma-yoga brings it

Nothing here purifies like knowledge; one perfected in yoga finds it, without fail, by himself, within himself.
