English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniBetter is one's own duty ( dharma) though devoid of merit, than the duty of another well performed. Better is death in one's own duty, than of another, which is fraught with danger.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारYour own dharma, even if it seems lacking, is better than another's done well; death in your own dharma brings good, another's brings fear.
What is Krishna saying?
Another's duty may look full of merit, be easy, pleasant and bring money, comfort and honour — yet since it is not prescribed for you, in the end it brings fear. One's own duty may look less meritorious, be hard and bring no reward — yet done without desire it leads to one's good. Arjuna thinks living on alms is better than fighting; Krishna is saying, in effect, that alms are a monk's dharma but for a householder kshatriya they are another's dharma. Sin comes not from doing one's own duty but from doing it with attachment and aversion; done free of them, it gives the experience of samata.
Svadharma
- May look less meritorious, may be hard
- Done without desire, leads to one's goodनिष्कामभावसे करनेपर कल्याणकारक
- Being a yogi, serving, loving
Paradharma
- May look attractive, easy, rewarding
- In the end brings fear
- Being an enjoyer, wanting things, attachment
Step by step
- 1
What believers call 'dharma' is the same as 'duty'; following svadharma and doing one's duty are one thing.
- 2
Hardship met while doing one's duty is not suffering but tapas, and it uplifts faster than chosen austerity.
- 3
At the deepest level, svadharma is the self's own nature — being free of desire, 'mine' and attachment, serving, loving; wanting pleasure and possessions is paradharma, the body's dharma.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThose who suffered for freedom
People who suffered, went to jail again and again and even went to the gallows to free their country are still praised, while those jailed for crimes are condemned. Even worldly eyes honour one who holds to duty through hardship.
King Harishchandra
Through hardship, insult and disgrace, Harishchandra never swerved from his dharma of truth; by its power he went to the supreme abode taking all his subjects with him.
The patient under the knife
When a doctor lances a boil, the patient stays at peace because he keeps the good outcome in view. A seeker whose goal is God likewise stays inwardly glad through defeat, loss and hardship.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींcomparison
Scrolling through a friend's glamorous job can make your own responsibilities — caring for a parent, a steady unexciting role — look 'less'. The verse asks you to judge your duty by what it is for, not by how it looks next to someone else's.
Why it matters
Swamiji notes that Krishna mainly answers Arjuna's question in this very verse: don't trade the duty in front of you for one that only looks better.
