The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

God does not need elaborate materials or rituals; whatever simple thing is offered with love, He accepts — indeed He eats it.

What is Krishna saying?

Worship of the gods needs many materials, rules and methods; one might think God's worship is even harder. Krishna answers: whoever offers Me with love a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water — whatever is easily at hand — I eat that loving gift. Swamiji explains that God's relationship with the soul is one of natural belonging, so what matters is not method or object but the feeling of 'He is mine'. Offered with love, the thing itself becomes love, and God takes it into Himself, because He hungers for love, not for things.

Step by step

  1. 1

Not the object but the devotee's feeling is what counts — God is hungry for love, not for things.

  2. 2

God does not merely accept the offering; He 'eats' it — even a flower meant only for smelling.

  3. 3

Leaf, flower and fruit arise from water; together they stand for all things — so all things are to be offered to God.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Draupadi's leaf

Krishna ate a single leaf from Draupadi's vessel and satisfied the three worlds. Swamiji also recalls Gajendra's flower, Shabari's fruits and Rantideva's water.

Vidurani's banana peels

Lost in love, Vidurani handed Krishna the banana peels instead of the fruit, and He ate the peels as if they were the fruit. When love overflows, neither the giver nor the receiver notices what is given.

The child and its mother's lap

A child going to its mother's lap needs no procedure; it goes out of belonging. So too, reaching God needs no ritual or mantra — only a firm sense that He is one's own.

relationships

A parent treasures a child's crayon drawing more than an expensive gift from a stranger — not for the paper, but for the love in it.

Why it matters

No one is too poor or too unskilled to worship God: the only requirement is love and the sense that He is one's own.

Offer every action — eating, sacrifice, giving, austerity — to God; better still, offer yourself, and every action is offered automatically.
