Guṇatraya-Vibhāga Yoga · The Yoga of the Division of the Three Gunas

How sattva, rajas and tamas bind us, and how one goes beyond them.

What is happening here?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Chapter 13 ended by saying that one who sees the field and its knower as distinct attains the Supreme. Now come the questions: what is that knowledge, how great is it, and what is the easy way to it? Bondage comes from prakriti and from its products, the gunas; chapter 13 freed us from the first, and chapter 14 addresses the second. Krishna praises this knowledge, shows prakriti as the mother and Himself as the father of all bodies, and explains how each guna binds, how it overpowers the others, its signs, and where it leads at death. Arjuna then asks the marks, conduct and means of one who is beyond the gunas, and Krishna gives unswerving devotion as the means.

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

Swamiji’s introduction: bondage has two sources, prakriti and its products the gunas. Chapter 13 dealt with release from prakriti; chapter 14 now deals with release from the gunas, starting with the glory of this knowledge.

Sattva, rajas and tamas bind the imperishable self to the body

The three gunas born of prakriti bind the imperishable embodied self to the body, but only because it takes the body as ‘I’ and ‘mine’.

14.19

No doer but the gunas, and oneself beyond them

When the discerning person sees no doer other than the gunas and knows himself to be beyond them, he attains My being.

14.22

The one beyond the gunas neither resents nor craves their moods

When clarity, activity or delusion arise, the one beyond the gunas does not resent them; when they subside, he does not long for them.

14.26

Unswerving devotion carries one beyond the gunas

One who serves Me with unswerving devotion goes beyond the three gunas and becomes fit to realise Brahman.

14.27

I am the ground of Brahman, of immortality, of eternal dharma and of absolute joy

Brahman, imperishable immortality, eternal dharma and absolute joy all rest in Me, and are not different from Me.
