The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

What is Krishna saying?

Krishna had already given a way beyond the gunas in 14.19–20, but Arjuna asked again, so Krishna, seeing him fit for devotion, gives devotion as the way. ‘Unswerving’ means no other support at all: not the world, and not even other paths like knowledge or action. ‘Devotion’ means God alone as one’s support, hope, strength and faith. For one who takes refuge in God alone, going beyond the gunas does not have to be achieved; it happens by itself through His grace. Such a devotee becomes fit for Brahman, though he does not rest content with that; his joy is in pleasing God.

Step by step

  1. 1

The same reality reached through knowledge or action is reached through devotion; the means differ, the attainment does not.

  2. 2

Appendix: worship of God with form is itself beyond the gunas, for the gunas depend on Him, not He on them.

Why it matters

Swamiji’s introduction to chapter 15 builds on this verse: devotion free of the world’s support is the easy way beyond the gunas, and the next chapter is taught to bring it about.

Brahman, imperishable immortality, eternal dharma and absolute joy all rest in Me, and are not different from Me.
