English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Sattva, rajas and tamas-these gunas (modes) born of prakrti, bind the imperishable spirit to the body, O mighty-armed.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The three gunas born of prakriti bind the imperishable embodied self to the body, but only because it takes the body as ‘I’ and ‘mine’.

What is Krishna saying?

The gunas do not bind anyone on their own; the self binds itself by linking with them. By taking things, money, family, body, temperament, moods and circumstances as its own, the self, though imperishable and free, becomes dependent on perishable things. When the money one calls one’s own rises or falls, one is affected; when people one calls one’s own are born or die, one is affected. Yet the self’s real nature stays exactly as it is, which is why Krishna calls it ‘imperishable’. The body is separating from us every moment, so the only effort needed is to stop holding on to what is leaving by itself.

Step by step

  1. 1

Two ways the self relates to the body: ‘I am the body’ (ahanta) and ‘the body is mine’ (mamata).

  2. 2

As long as there is a wish to live forever and a fear of death, one is bound by the gunas.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Marrying into a family

Once married, a man is tied to his wife’s whole family, and her needs start to feel like his own. In the same way, once the self calls the body ‘I’ and ‘mine’, it gets tied to the whole world, and the body’s needs start to feel like its own needs.

Money one calls ‘mine’

The money a man calls his own affects him when it rises or falls, though money elsewhere in the world does not. The binding lies in the ‘mine’.

जैसे, मनुष्य जिस धनको अपना मानता है, उस धनके घटने-बढ़नेसे स्वयंपर असर पड़ता है;

money

Your portfolio drops eight percent and your mood drops with it. The market did not reach inside you; the tie of ‘mine’ carried the fall in.

Why it matters

Swamiji: if the gunas themselves bound us, no one could ever be free while they exist. Since we bind ourselves, we can also stop.

The path of the Unmanifest is harder for the body-bound

Those drawn to the formless while still identified with the body face greater hardship; body-identification is the main obstacle there.

13.21

Attachment to the gunas drives rebirth

Only the self identified with the body becomes the enjoyer of the gunas, and attachment to them causes birth in higher and lower wombs.
