Puruṣottama Yoga · The Yoga of the Supreme Person

The world, the soul and the Supreme, and why the Supreme alone is to be loved.

What is happening here?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

In 14.26 Krishna named unswerving devotion as the way beyond the gunas. In that verse, the words for devotion free of the world’s support, the word ‘who’ (the jiva) and the word ‘Me’ (God) point briefly to three subjects: the world, the jiva and God. Chapter 15 explains all three in detail. The world is an upside-down peepal tree, rooted in God, which is to be cut with the weapon of non-attachment. The jiva is God’s eternal part that takes the mind and senses as its own. God’s glory is seen in the sun, the moon, the earth, digestion and every heart. Finally Krishna names the perishable, the imperishable and the Supreme Person beyond both, and says that whoever knows Him as Purushottama worships Him with his whole being.

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

Swamiji’s introduction: the jiva is beyond the gunas by nature, but through identification, mineness and desire it has bound itself to the body. Until it knows the glory of the Supreme who is beyond the gunas, it cannot be fully free of them. So, to bring about unswerving devotion, Krishna reveals His most secret glory in this chapter.

Questions this chapter answers

  • ?What is this world really, and how is one freed from it?
  • ?What is the soul, and what mistake keeps it bound?
  • ?Who is the Supreme Person, beyond the perishable and the imperishable?

The world is a peepal tree with its root above in God and its branches below; whoever truly knows this tree knows the Vedas.

15.3

Cut the world-tree with the sword of non-attachment

Looked at closely, the world has no beginning, end or real standing; its firm-looking roots are cut with the strong weapon of non-attachment.

15.7

The soul is My own eternal part

The self that has become the jiva is My eternal part, yet it draws to itself the mind and senses, which belong to prakriti.

15.15

I dwell in every heart

God is seated in every heart; memory, knowledge and the removal of doubt come from Him, and He alone is what the Vedas teach.

15.19

Whoever knows Me as the Supreme Person worships Me with his whole being
