Chapter 14 · Verse 27

I am the ground of Brahman, of immortality, of eternal dharma and of absolute joy

brahmaṇo hi pratiṣṭhāhamamṛtasyāvyayasya ca।

śāśvatasya ca dharmasya sukhasyaikāntikasya ca॥ 27॥

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

For, I am the abode of Brahma, the Immortal and the Imperishable, of eternal Dharma (Law or righteousness) and of absolute bliss.

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Brahman, imperishable immortality, eternal dharma and absolute joy all rest in Me, and are not different from Me.

What is Krishna saying?

The link asks how worshipping Krishna can make one fit for Brahman. The answer is that He is the ground of Brahman, not as a separate support but as the same reality. The formless Brahman and the Lord with form are two aspects that differ only from the seeker’s point of view; in truth they are one. The same holds for immortality, eternal dharma and unending joy: say Krishna or say any of these, it is one thing. So it is right that worship of the Lord brings realisation of Brahman.

  1. 1

Appendix: Brahman and immortality correspond to the path of knowledge, eternal dharma to the path of action, and absolute joy to the path of meditation. Taking refuge in the Lord fulfils all three and leads to the ‘complete’ (samagra) reality.

Fire with and without form

Burning fire has form, while the fire latent in wood is formless; they are two forms of one fire. In the same way the Lord with form and the formless Brahman are one in essence.

Aroma and taste

The nose knows a meal by its aroma and the tongue by its taste, yet the meal is one. From the side of knowledge it is Brahman, from the side of devotion it is the Lord.

Why it matters

It removes the idea that devotion to a personal God and the realisation of the formless are rival goals.
