Prakriti
prakṛti
In simple words
Prakriti is nature in the broadest sense: not only rocks and bodies but also thoughts, feelings and the sense of 'I'. In Sankhya, everything you can observe belongs to prakriti; only the observer does not.
What is it?
In Sankhya, prakriti is the single, unconscious, ever-changing source of the world, made of three strands (gunas). From it evolve intellect, ego, mind, senses and elements. The Gita adopts this vocabulary, calling prakriti the Lord's lower (insentient) nature and distinguishing it from His higher nature, the living soul. Later Vedanta and Tantra reinterpret prakriti as maya or as the power (shakti) of the divine.
Scholar’s note
Sankhya's satkaryavada (the effect pre-exists in the cause) underpins the doctrine of prakriti as the material cause. The Gita's eightfold prakriti (7.4) and the parā/aparā distinction (7.5) are central for theistic readings. In Advaita, prakriti is often equated with maya as Ishvara's power; in Shakta thought, Prakriti is the Goddess herself. How its meaning differs
Prakriti is real, eternal and unconscious, the root of all evolution; it exists for the sake of purusha's experience and liberation.
Yoga accepts Sankhya's prakriti; the practice aims at discriminating the seer (purusha) from the seen (prakriti).
Prakriti is essentially maya: the power of appearance associated with Ishvara, neither real nor unreal, sublated by knowledge of Brahman.
Prakriti is real insentient matter, one of the modes that make up God's body along with souls.
Prakriti is identified with the Goddess as the dynamic, creative power of the absolute, not an inert stuff opposed to spirit.
In the Bhagavad Gita — as Sadhak Sanjivani explains it
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारGod's lower prakriti has eight parts — earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego — and His higher prakriti is the jiva, by which the world is held (7.4–5). The lower is inert and always changing; the higher is conscious and unchanging (7.5). Prakriti and purusha are both beginningless, and all modifications and gunas are born of prakriti (13.19). Swamiji states that prakriti is unreal, inert and sorrowful, perishable and ever active, while purusha is real, conscious and blissful, and the two are wholly unrelated (13.19). All action happens only in prakriti (3.27, 3.5). The jiva is bound only because it takes what belongs to prakriti as its own (15.7).
Where it appears in the Gita
3.27Nature acts — the deluded ego says "I am the doer"
All actions are done by the gunas of prakriti; one whose mind is deluded by ego assumes, 'I am the doer.'
13.21Attachment to the gunas drives rebirth
Only the self identified with the body becomes the enjoyer of the gunas, and attachment to them causes birth in higher and lower wombs.
14.5Sattva, rajas and tamas bind the imperishable self to the body
The three gunas born of prakriti bind the imperishable embodied self to the body, but only because it takes the body as ‘I’ and ‘mine’.
15.7The soul is My own eternal part
The self that has become the jiva is My eternal part, yet it draws to itself the mind and senses, which belong to prakriti.
