Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

When the senses are held back, objects fall away but the taste for them remains; on experiencing the Supreme, even that taste goes.

What is Krishna saying?

Merely withdrawing the senses is not the mark of the steady one. A person who gives up food by choice or through illness still keeps the relish inside. Likewise a seeker who turns away from objects still carries 'rasa-buddhi', the sense of sweetness in them. This rasa lives in the ego, and its gross form is attachment. Swamiji advises removing it from one's very sense of 'I' — 'I am desireless; wanting is not my work' — and says it ends completely only on realising the Supreme. It is not a rule that losing rasa makes one steady, but it is a rule that the steady one has no rasa.

Step by step

  1. 1

Rasa is the subtle pull and sweetness toward pleasures that comes from granting them reality and importance; 'that was so enjoyable' is its memory.

  2. 2

While rasa remains, one stays dependent on objects, actions and people; when it goes, that inner slavery ends.

  3. 3

Even before realisation, rasa can fade through indifference, reflection, satsang, grace of saints and the company of the realised.

  4. 4

As the higher taste of service, knowledge or love grows, the perishable taste drops away on its own.

The patient who cannot eat

A sick person thinks: my body cannot take these foods now, but once I recover I will enjoy them. The objects are absent, yet the relish is intact. So too the seeker who has only held the senses back.

Toys and money

As a child we found joy in toys; when we grew up and money became interesting, toys lost their pull without any effort. In the same way, when the taste of spiritual practice comes, the taste for pleasures falls away by itself.

The finger that scratches

When we scratch an itch with a finger, the finger itself is not changed once the itch is gone. Likewise, when the senses of a realised person contact objects, no disturbance arises in his mind, because he does not engage with them for his own pleasure.

social media

Deleting an app for a week removes the object, but if you keep thinking about what you are missing, the rasa is still there — which is exactly Swamiji's point about the patient.

Why it matters

It separates outward renunciation from real freedom, and points to the inner taste as the true knot to be untied.
