English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniThat, which is night to all beings, in that state (of Divine Knowledge and Supreme Bliss) an emancipated person keeps awake. And that (the everchanging worldly happiness), in which all beings keep awake, is night, to the enlightened seer.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारWhat is night for all beings, turning from God, the self-controlled one is awake to; what the world wakes for, pleasure and hoarding, is night to the sage.
What is Krishna saying?
Those whose senses and mind are not controlled are asleep to God: never asking what God is, why they suffer, or what their actions will lead to — that is their night. People who spend day and night only on eating, comfort, pleasures and accumulating money are counted, in this respect, with animals; indeed they become more troublesome, since animals do not hoard. The self-controlled one is awake to God, to the Self and to the true nature of the world. The world is very alert about every rupee and every inch of land; to the sage all that is darkness, since none of it lasts or goes with anyone.
Where the world is awake
- Enjoyment and hoarding, every rupee and inch of land
- Honour, praise and comfort
Where the sage is awake
- Knowing God, the Self and the world as they areपरमात्मा, अपने स्वरूप और संसारको यथार्थ जानना
- Using things rightly in the service of others
Step by step
- 1
The sage sees both day and night; the worldly see only night. One absorbed in the world cannot truly know the world — only by standing apart from it can one know it.
- 2
One established in 'what is' knows both 'what is' and 'what is not'; one standing in 'what is not' cannot know even that rightly.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तChildren fighting over pebbles
Children fight over pebbles and bits of coloured glass, delighted when they win one and miserable when they lose. A grown-up sees there is no real gain or loss. So the sage sees people fighting, lying and cheating for pleasures and possessions and asks: what have they really gained, and what will go with them?
Specks in a defective eye
With a defect in the eyes, we see cobweb-like specks when looking at the sky, even with eyes closed; yet the intellect is certain the sky has no cobwebs. So too the world appears through the senses, yet the sage is firmly certain it is only an appearance.
The child and the old man
A child has seen only childhood, not youth; an old man has seen childhood, youth and old age. One who keeps money does not know renunciation, but one who has given it up knows both keeping and giving up. So the sage knows both the world and the Real.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींcomparison
Staying up late tracking likes, follower counts and price drops is being very 'awake' — in the sense this verse calls night.
Why it matters
It turns ordinary values upside down, inviting us to ask whether what we are most alert about is actually worth our wakefulness.
