Ahankara

ahaṅkāra

I-maker, egoThe 'I-maker' — the sense of being a separate doer and owner.
Editorial overviewGita layer: Sadhak Sanjivani

In simple words

Ahankara literally means 'I-maker'. It is the habit of saying 'I did this' and 'this is mine' about the body, mind and actions. Many Indian traditions see it as a key knot to untie.

What is it?

In Sankhya, ahankara evolves from buddhi and gives rise to mind, senses and the subtle elements; it individuates experience. The Gita counts ahankara among the eight parts of prakriti and warns that one deluded by it thinks 'I am the doer', while actions are really done by the gunas. Freedom from egoism and possessiveness (nirmama, nirahankara) is a recurring mark of the wise.

Scholar’s note

Sankhya Karika 24–25 describes the sattvic and tamasic forms of ahankara and their products. In Advaita, ahankara is the 'I'-thought in which Self and not-self are knotted together (chit-jada-granthi). Ramana Maharshi's inquiry targets this 'I'-thought directly. Buddhist thought speaks similarly of the conceit 'I am' (asmimana).

How its meaning differs

Editorial overview
Each tradition in its own terms. None is ranked.
Sankhya

Ahankara is a material principle that produces the sense of 'I' and 'mine' and the further evolutes.

Advaita Vedanta

The ego is the knot where pure consciousness is confused with the body-mind; inquiry into its source dissolves it.

Buddhist philosophy

The conceit 'I am' is a subtle fetter; it is dismantled by insight into not-self.

Sikh philosophy (Gurmat)

Haumai (ego, self-centredness) is the root malady separating one from God; its cure is the Name and living by divine order.

In the Bhagavad Gita — as Sadhak Sanjivani explains it

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

All actions are done by the qualities of prakriti, but one deluded by ego thinks 'I am the doer' (3.27). Swamiji explains that aham is part of the lower prakriti; taking it as one's own nature is identification, which is only assumed and never real (3.27). In 'I am', the 'I' is inert prakriti and the 'am' is consciousness; doership and enjoyership live in this knot (13.21). One who has no sense of 'I am doing' and whose intellect is not stained by selfish desire is not bound even by what he does (18.17). Everyone's experience of deep sleep shows the self exists even when the ego dissolves — so we can become free of ego (2.71). For the devotee, the way is to change the 'I' itself: 'I am God's' (9.34).
