The turbulent senses, O son of Kunti, forcibly sway the mind of even a wise man, whopractises self-control.

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

While taste for objects remains, the turbulent senses forcibly carry away the mind even of a wise person who is striving.

What is Krishna saying?

This verse says what goes wrong if rasa is not removed. Swamiji describes the person meant: one who strives, acts with discrimination, gives up attachment and desire for fruit, wishes and works for others' good, and knows right from wrong and the results of actions. Even such a person's senses drag the mind toward objects when they appear, because as long as the intellect is not fully established in God, some reality of the world remains in it, and impressions of past enjoyment persist. Hence a seeker should never trust that 'my senses are under control' or take pride in having conquered them.

Step by step

  1. 1

Learning and effort alone do not guarantee safety; the impressions of past enjoyment can pull the mind when objects appear.

  2. 2

Never trust that the senses are conquered, and never be proud of being self-controlled.

  3. 3

Here the senses carry away the mind; in 2.67 the mind carries away the intellect — so both must be restrained.

Why it matters

It guards the seeker against overconfidence, which is itself an opening for a fall.

2.59

Objects fall away, the taste remains — until God is seen

When the senses are held back, objects fall away but the taste for them remains; on experiencing the Supreme, even that taste goes.

2.61

Restrain the senses and rest in Me

Restraining all the senses, the seeker should sit devoted to Me; one whose senses are under control has a steady intellect.

2.67

One sense, one mind, and the boat is blown off course

When the mind follows even one wandering sense, it carries away the intellect, as wind carries away a boat on water.
