English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Those, whose minds are carried away by such flowery words (who are attracted towards pleasures and who are deeply attached to pleasure and prosperity), cannot attain the determinate intellect, concentrated in God.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Those whose minds are carried away by pleasure and possessions cannot even form the firm resolve to attain God.

What is Krishna saying?

'Bhoga' is seeking pleasure through the five sense objects, bodily comfort, honour and fame; 'aishvarya' is hoarding things and money for that pleasure. Those attached to these cannot decide 'I must attain God alone'. Swamiji stresses that it is not objects themselves that obstruct, but the importance we give to pleasures inside us. The human birth is given for fulfilling one's duty and attaining liberation; every favourable or unfavourable situation is material for spiritual practice, not for enjoyment.

Step by step

  1. 1

Pleasures do not hold us back as much as the importance we give them.

  2. 2

Every situation in human life is material for sadhana, not for enjoyment.

  3. 3

Even the pride of learning — 'I am a scholar' — is a pleasure that blocks the one resolve.

  4. 4

The karma-yogi, made happy by others' happiness and moved by their sorrow, loses the desire for both pleasure and hoarding.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The fish caught in a net

A fish caught in a net cannot move forward. In the same way, a person entangled in pleasure and hoarding cannot even turn his gaze towards God.

Modern analogy · not from the source

money

Owning a good phone or a nice flat is not the problem the verse points to. The problem is when upgrading them becomes what life is quietly organised around — then no single higher aim can take root.

Why it matters

It locates the obstacle precisely — not in the world, but in the value we give to pleasure and possession.

One firm resolve, or endless scattered minds

The resolute intellect aimed at God is one; the minds of those driven by desires are endless, and each branches endlessly.

2.42

Flowery words that promise pleasure

People without discrimination speak the flowery words of the Vedas that praise only pleasures and heaven, claiming there is nothing beyond.
