English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani · 2.62–63

Contemplating constantly on the objects of senses, a man develops attachment for them; from attachment springs 'desire and from desire (unfulfilled) originates anger. From anger arises delusion; from delusion, confusion of memory; from which grows loss of reason; and with loss of reason (discrimination), he goes to complete ruin.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Anger brings delusion; delusion confuses memory; loss of memory destroys discrimination; and with discrimination gone, a person falls.

What is Krishna saying?

The chain continues. Anger clouds a person with delusion. Swamiji notes that desire, greed and possessiveness also cause delusion, but Krishna names anger because in anger the impulse is to harm others, making its delusion the most dangerous. Deluded, one forgets the resolve made through scripture and good reflection — 'I must do this practice, I must uplift myself.' Then the discrimination that shines in the intellect is lost and the capacity for fresh thinking disappears. Without discrimination one falls from one's position. Explaining this takes time, but in life all these states arise instantly, like an electric current.

Step by step

  1. 1

The full chain: dwelling on objects → attachment → desire → anger → delusion → loss of memory → loss of discrimination → ruin.

  2. 2

Step 5 — Delusion (sammoha): anger clouds judgement; one says harsh things even to friends and elders and behaves as one should not.

  3. 3

Step 6 — Loss of memory (smriti-vibhrama): the resolve formed through scripture and good thought — to practise and to uplift oneself — is forgotten.

  4. 4

Steps 7–8 — Loss of discrimination (buddhi-nasha), then ruin (pranashyati): with the power of fresh reflection gone, one falls from one's state.

Laying out the chain step by step takes time, but in life there is no delay: all these states flash up at once, like an electric current, and bring about a person's fall.

In a heated argument you say something you swore you never would. In that moment the resolve was simply gone — the 'loss of memory' this verse describes — and good judgement went with it.

Why it matters

Because the fall happens in an instant, protection must come earlier — through devotion to God and guarding the very first link.
