Sadhaka-Sanjivani · 2.64–65

But a self-controlled Yogi in practice or a striver, while using objects with the seuses, which are controlled and freed from attraction and aversion he attains placidity of mind. With the attainment of such placidity, all his sorrows come to an end; and the intellect of such a person of tranquil mind, soon becomes, firmly established in God.

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The self-controlled seeker, moving among objects with senses under control and free of attraction and aversion, attains inner clarity.

What is Krishna saying?

The word 'tu' (but) marks the contrast: with attachment, merely thinking of objects causes a fall; without it, even engaging with objects leads upward. The seeker keeps the inner faculty and the senses under control, and the senses stay free from raga and dvesha — nothing is taken in with attachment, nothing rejected with aversion. What matters is not taking or leaving objects but not letting like and dislike arise. Such a person handles all worldly dealings, yet does not 'enjoy' them for pleasure; engagement with an enjoyment-mindset is what causes the fall.

The bhogi (2.62–63)

  • With raga-dvesha, even thinking of objects leads to a fall
  • Intellect is destroyed

The yogi (2.64–65)

  • Free of raga-dvesha, even engaging with objects leads upward
  • Intellect becomes established in God

Step by step

  1. 1

Neither indulge in objects with attachment nor renounce them with aversion — both tie one to the world.

  2. 2

He enjoys with renunciation rather than attachment; enjoyment with renunciation is not really enjoyment at all.

  3. 3

The clarity (prasada) that results should not itself be enjoyed or settled into; then it quickly leads to God.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The gopis held back at home

When some gopis setting out to meet Krishna were locked in by their families, their longing to meet Him burned away rajas and tamas, and the joy of thinking of Him dissolved sattva. Free of the gunas, they left the body and reached Him first. Intense God-directed joy or longing leads to God; worldly joy and sorrow only deepen bondage.

career

You can use a good salary, a comfortable office and a nice meal without making them the point of your life. Using without craving, and not rejecting out of dislike, is the line this verse draws.

Why it matters

It shows that the path is not running away from life but engaging with it without like and dislike.

The chain of fall begins in thought

Dwelling on objects breeds attachment; attachment breeds desire; and when desire is obstructed, anger arises.

2.63

From anger to ruin

Anger brings delusion; delusion confuses memory; loss of memory destroys discrimination; and with discrimination gone, a person falls.

2.65

In inner clarity, all sorrow ends

When inner clarity comes, all sorrows end, and the intellect of one with a clear mind quickly becomes steady in God.
