English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniWhen, like a tortoise, withdrawing its limbs from all.sides, he detaches completely his senses from sense-objects, his wisdom is stable.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारAs a tortoise draws in its limbs from all sides, when one withdraws the senses fully from their objects, the intellect becomes steady.
What is Krishna saying?
This begins the answer to 'how does he sit?'. The tortoise shows six parts when it walks — four feet, a tail and a head — and only its shell when it withdraws. So the steady one withdraws the five senses and the mind from their objects. 'Samharate' means he does not dwell on objects even in thought; if even a mental link remains, he is not yet sthitaprajna. Swamiji points out that the verse uses 'when' but not 'then': the realisation that follows is not a product of time or of any act, just as the sun is not created by opening one's eyes.
Step by step
- 1
The withdrawal must include the mind; even a slight mental connection with the senses' objects means one is not yet steady.
- 2
The experience of God is not produced by withdrawal; withdrawal only removes the curtain of connection with objects.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe tortoise
When a tortoise walks, six parts are visible: four legs, a tail and a head. When it pulls them in, only its back is seen. In the same way the steady one withdraws the five senses and the mind from their objects.
The sun and closed eyes
With eyes closed we do not see the sun; opening them, we see it at once. Opening the eyes did not create the sun — it was there all along. Likewise, turning the senses away from objects does not produce God; it only reveals what was always present.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींexams
Putting the phone away before studying is a small outward withdrawal; the tortoise image asks for more — that the mind too stops reaching for the feed.
Why it matters
It shows that steadiness means withdrawing inner interest, not just outer contact — and that what is revealed was never absent.
