What is Krishna saying?

Arjuna feared that killing his kin would bring sin. Krishna says the cause of sin is not the war but one's own desire. In war, victory or defeat comes first, then gain or loss, then pleasure or pain; Arjuna's aim is not to be moved by these but to do his duty while staying even in all three. Swamiji explains that 'sin' here covers both sin and merit, whose fruit — heaven and hell — is bondage; acting in samata, neither binds. The Gita thus shows how to attain the highest while living and working, even in a situation as terrible as war.

Arjuna argued (ch. 1)

  • I see no good in fighting
  • How can we be happy after fighting?
  • War leads to hell
  • Fighting will bring sin

Krishna answered (2.31–38)

  • Nothing is better for a kshatriya than righteous war
  • Kshatriyas who get such a war are happy
  • Fighting opens heaven
  • Not fighting will bring sin

Step by step

  1. 1

Sin comes from partiality, desire, selfishness and ego — and from not doing duty or doing what is not duty — not from the duty itself.

  2. 2

Neither begin an action out of greed for pleasure nor abandon it out of fear of pain; let scripture guide what you do and don't do.

  3. 3

Whether one acts with desire or without, one must do one's duty diligently, without laziness or carelessness.

  4. 4

Without giving up the insistence of one's own mind, there is no true good — whatever form that insistence takes.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Pleasure coming and going

Pleasure feels good when it comes and bad when it goes; pain feels bad when it comes and good when it goes. So which is good and which is bad? Both are really alike — so keep an even mind in both and do your duty.

Arjuna and Uddhava

Arjuna insisted that living on alms was better than war, so Krishna told him to fight. Uddhava wanted to stay with Krishna, so Krishna sent him to the Himalayas to do austerity. Either way, the lesson is that one's mind's insistence must be given up.

exams

Preparing for an entrance exam, you can't control the rank, but you can control the hours of honest work. Sitting down to study with 'my job is the preparation, the result is not my aim' is this verse in small form.

career

A product launch may succeed or flop. Doing your part fully while keeping your mind steady in both outcomes keeps the work from becoming a source of anxiety and bondage.

Why it matters

This is the Gita's distinctive art: equanimity in success and failure while doing one's duty lets a person reach the highest in any situation, without leaving the world.

16.24

Let scripture be your authority on what to do

In deciding what should and should not be done, scripture is your authority; knowing what it prescribes, you should do your duty here.

2.31

Look at your own duty too — do not waver

Even considering your own duty you should not waver, for nothing is more beneficial for a kshatriya than a righteous war.

2.32

A war that came on its own is an open door to heaven

This war has come to you unsought, an open gate to heaven; fortunate are the kshatriyas who get such a war.

2.33

Abandon this righteous war and you incur sin

If you do not fight this righteous war, you will give up your duty and your honour and incur sin.

2.3

Cast off this petty weakness — stand up

Do not yield to unmanliness, it does not suit you; drop this petty weakness of heart and rise to do your duty.

2.5

Better to beg than to kill my teachers

Arjuna says even living on alms is better than killing his noble elders and enjoying pleasures stained with their blood.
