The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारIf slain you gain heaven, if victorious you enjoy the earth; so rise, Arjuna, resolved to fight.
What is Krishna saying?
In 2.6 Arjuna said he did not know whether they would win or lose. Krishna answers: either way you gain — heaven if you die, the kingdom if you win; not fighting brings loss either way. Addressing him as 'Kaunteya' recalls that Kunti herself sent the message that he should fight. Since Krishna's command in 2.3 had left Arjuna in doubt, he now asks him to make one firm resolve. Swamiji sees the deeper meaning: one should never abandon a duty that has come, but carry it out with zeal, for in doing one's duty lies one's humanity.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तSweets in both hands
Swamiji uses the Hindi idiom 'laddus in both hands': whichever way the battle goes, fighting brings Arjuna gain.
Kunti's message
When Krishna went to the Kauravas with the peace proposal, Kunti sent Arjuna the message that he should fight. By calling him 'Kaunteya', son of Kunti, Krishna reminds him of it.
Doing one's duty betters both this world and the next; wavering between options only weakens us, so a firm resolve is needed.

Arjuna admits he cannot decide whether fighting or not fighting is better, nor who will win; he does not wish to live after killing his kin.
2.3Cast off this petty weakness — stand up
Do not yield to unmanliness, it does not suit you; drop this petty weakness of heart and rise to do your duty.

Holding victory and defeat, gain and loss, pleasure and pain as equal, engage in battle; so you will incur no sin.
