Chapter 2 · Verse 39

Now hear the same evenness through Karma-yoga

eṣā te'bhihitā sāṅkhye buddhiryoge tvimāṃ śṛṇu।

buddhyā yukto yayā pārtha karmabandhaṃ prahāsyasi॥ 39॥

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

O Partha (Arjuna), this attitude of mind has been presented to you from the point of view ofJnanayoga(Discipline of Knowledge); now hear of the same, from the point of view of Karmayoga (the Discipline of Selfless-Action). Equipped with this state of mind, you will be able to completely shake off the shackles of Karma (Action).

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The evenness already taught through Sankhya can also be reached through Karma-yoga, and it frees one from the bondage of action.

What is Krishna saying?

Krishna now changes the topic: the word 'tu' marks a break from Sankhya to Yoga. The evenness (samabuddhi) was already explained in verses 11–30 through discrimination between body and embodied self; now he will show how the same evenness is reached through Karma-yoga. Arjuna feared that fighting would bring sin, but in the Lord's view sin comes only from an uneven mind — from attachment and aversion. With an even mind, action does not bind.

Step by step

  1. 1

Evenness can be reached by either path: Sankhya (separating from the body by knowing body and self apart) or Karma-yoga (giving up what should not be done and doing what should be done).

  2. 2

It is not action that binds but the uneven mind — partiality, insistence, attachment and aversion within it.

  3. 3

Karma-yoga has two parts: knowing one's duty (verses 31–37) and the science of Yoga (verses 39–53).

  4. 4

Acting for the welfare of the world (lokasangraha), without selfish motive, makes evenness easy to attain.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The deeds of the world do not touch us

Countless good and bad acts go on in the world every day, yet none of their merit or sin attaches to us, because we have no partiality or attachment towards them. In the same way, one who acts with an even mind is not bound by his own actions.

Why it matters

It shifts the question from 'Is this action sinful?' to 'Is my mind even while doing it?' — the hinge of the whole Karma-yoga teaching.

2.38

Treat victory and defeat alike — then fight, and incur no sin

Holding victory and defeat, gain and loss, pleasure and pain as equal, engage in battle; so you will incur no sin.

2.31

Look at your own duty too — do not waver

Even considering your own duty you should not waver, for nothing is more beneficial for a kshatriya than a righteous war.

2.7

I am Your disciple — teach me

Confused about dharma and overpowered by weakness, Arjuna asks for what is decisively good for him and takes refuge in Krishna as His disciple.
