English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Therefore, let the scripture be the authority in determining, what ought to be done and what ought not to be. Having known what is prescribed in.the ordinance of scriptures, thou shouldst act accordingly in this world.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

In deciding what should and should not be done, scripture is your authority; knowing what it prescribes, you should do your duty here.

What is Krishna saying?

Those who are infatuated with their own survival do not know what to do and what to avoid, and they drift into the demonic. So keep scripture before you. Following saints whose lives accord with scripture is also following scripture; in fact scriptures themselves come from the conduct of realised souls. Arjuna had been judging sin and merit by his own opinion; Krishna tells him to take scripture as the measure. Swamiji explains that action itself does not bind. Scriptural acts done with selfishness and pride bind, and arbitrary acts against scripture degrade. Sin comes from selfishness, pride and wishing harm to others.

  1. 1

Appendix: for someone who has not read scripture, if their aim is their own true welfare, knowledge of their duty will come; ‘necessity is the mother of invention’. Without that aim, reading scripture only increases the conceit of knowing more.

Why it matters

It closes the account of the demonic nature with the remedy Swamiji names: that nature fades through conduct guided by scripture.

2.32

A war that came on its own is an open door to heaven

This war has come to you unsought, an open gate to heaven; fortunate are the kshatriyas who get such a war.

18.47

One’s own duty, though imperfect, is better

One’s own dharma, even without merit, is better than another’s done well; doing the work set by one’s own nature, one incurs no sin.
