Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Just as a person discards old clothes and puts on new ones, the embodied one leaves worn-out bodies and enters new ones.

What is Krishna saying?

Verse 13 said in brief that the wise do not grieve over the change of body; here Krishna gives an illustration. No one grieves over changing old clothes, so no one should grieve over the change of bodies. Swamiji stresses that the point of the analogy is not freedom or compulsion but removing grief: the wearer stays the same through every change of clothes, and the embodied one stays the same through every change of bodies. The pain of dying comes not from death itself but from the desire to go on living and from identifying with the body.

Step by step

  1. 1

A body is 'worn out' when its lifespan ends, whether it belongs to a child, a youth or an old person.

  2. 2

The plural 'bodies' shows that until one realises one's true nature, bodies keep being taken up endlessly.

  3. 3

Wanting ever-new things is the cause of birth and death; God keeps giving new things, including new bodies, to one who keeps wanting them.

  4. 4

Birth and death end by using our freedom rightly: acting for others' good, honouring what we already know, and turning toward God.

Changing old clothes

A person takes off old clothes and puts on new ones without grief. Leaving an old body is what we call dying and taking a new one is what we call being born; as long as the tie with prakriti remains, the embodied one keeps getting new bodies according to its actions or its last thoughts.

Why changing clothes doesn't hurt

We don't feel we are our clothes, so changing them causes no pain; the awareness 'the clothes are separate, I am separate' stays awake. A small child, though, cries even when its clothes are changed — that pain comes only from not understanding. Grief at death is the same kind of misunderstanding.

'I have become young'

When someone grows from boyhood into youth he says 'I have grown up', yet it is only his body that grew; he is the same person. In the same way coming and going belong to the body, and the embodied one only seems to travel because it identifies with the body.

An analogy fits in one respect only

Swamiji notes that any analogy fits only in part. The clothes analogy fits this much: a person stays one and the same through many changes of clothes, and the Self stays the same through many bodies in many births.

change

You switch phones every few years and move your contacts and photos across; you don't mourn the old handset, because you never thought you were the phone.

Why it matters

The fear of death shrinks when we see it as a change of covering, not an end of ourselves — and when we see that the real pain is our clinging to life and new desires.

Like childhood, youth and age — so is a new body

As the embodied one passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so it passes to another body; the steady one is not deluded by this.

The Self cannot be cut, burned, wetted or dried, because it is eternal, all-pervading, immovable, steady and ancient.
