English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniThis soul is uncleavable, incombustible and neither can be wetted nor dried. It is eternal, all-pervading, stable, constant and everlasting.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारThe Self cannot be cut, burned, wetted or dried, because it is eternal, all-pervading, immovable, steady and ancient.
What is Krishna saying?
This verse says why weapons and the elements cannot affect the Self: not because they are lacking, but because no action can enter it at all. Swamiji adds that the Self cannot be affected even by mantras, curses or herbs, which can affect the body. Then each word answers a doubt in turn: eternal in time (nitya), present in every being and thing (sarvagata), not moving from place to place (achala), not even trembling in place (sthanu), and never having been born (sanatana).
Step by step
- 1
'Nitya' points to what never changes in a world that does not stay still for a moment.
- 2
Even while we identify with body and world, the Self stays one and the same.
- 3
To experience 'I am not located in the body but all-pervading' is liberation while living.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तShakalya's curse and Damayanti's curse
The body can be cut or burned even by words: Shakalya's head fell when he could not answer Yajnavalkya, and a hunter burned to ashes without fire by Damayanti's curse. But the Self cannot be cut or burned by any such means.
Agastya drinking the ocean
The sage Agastya dried up the ocean, but no one can dry up the Self by any power.
The tree that sways in place
A tree stays in one place but still sways. One may think the Self, though it does not move about, might tremble like that. 'Sthanu' says no: there is no movement in it at all.
We are not seated in the body
The body sits in the world, but we do not sit in the body in that way. We have never truly been joined to it; the sense of oneness comes only from desire, 'mine-ness' and identification.
Arjuna grieved because he feared destruction; Krishna stresses with 'eva cha' that the Self simply is this way and is no object for grief.

Weapons cannot cut the Self, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, and wind cannot dry it.
2.25Unseen, unthinkable, unchanging — so do not grieve
The Self is not visible, not an object of thought, and is called changeless; knowing it so, you should not grieve.
