Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

One who truly knows the Self as indestructible, eternal, unborn and undiminishing cannot be the one who kills or makes another kill.

What is Krishna saying?

Verse 20 denied that the Self dies; this verse denies that it kills. Swamiji explains that one who has really experienced the Self as unchanging cannot become either the doer or the one who makes others do. With the four words avinashi, nitya, aja and avyaya Krishna again rules out all six changes. The Self is neither the doer nor the object of any action, so one should not grieve over killing and dying but carry out the duty that has come according to scripture.

Step by step

  1. 1

If the Self cannot be the doer (the killer), it cannot be the object of action (the killed) either.

  2. 2

What is born perishes by itself; what is never born never perishes.

  3. 3

Only the human body has the discrimination to know this; not using it is disrespect to the viveka God has given.

Why it matters

It turns the question away from 'who dies?' toward 'what is my duty?' — the Self is untouched, so the task at hand is to do what is right.
