English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Weapons cannot cut the soul, nor can fire burn it, water cannot drench it, nor can wind make it dry.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Weapons cannot cut the Self, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, and wind cannot dry it.

What is Krishna saying?

Swamiji explains that earth, water, fire and air simply cannot reach the Self, so they cannot change it. Space is not mentioned because it has no power to act; it only gives room. These four elements come from space and cannot even harm space, its cause mahat, or prakriti itself — so how could they reach the Self, which is beyond prakriti altogether? The Self gives these elements their very existence and pervades them; what is pervaded cannot damage what pervades it.

Step by step

  1. 1

Even when the body is cut, burned, drowned or dried by weapons, the Self remains unchanged.

  2. 2

The elements get their existence and power from the Self; they cannot distort their own source.

  3. 3

So Arjuna's grief that his relatives will die is, Krishna says, a lack of understanding.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The wood and its 'is'

When we say 'the wood is', the cutting, burning, wetting and drying happen to the wood, never to the 'is'. The wood never stays one way; the 'is' never becomes many. So too change happens to the body, not to the Self.

Sadhak Sanjivani ·

Why it matters

It gives a way to look at our own experience: whatever happens to the body happens to what changes, while the 'is' in us stays untouched.
