English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniThe Blessed Lord said He who knows the Pipala tree which is said to be imperishable, as having its root above and branches below, and whose leaves are the Vedas, is the knower of the Vedas.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारThe world is a peepal tree with its root above in God and its branches below; whoever truly knows this tree knows the Vedas.
What is Krishna saying?
Ordinary trees have roots below; this strange tree has its root above: the Supreme, the cause and support of everything. Its main trunk is Brahma, from whom creation spreads downward. ‘Ashvattha’ means both the peepal and ‘that which will not last till tomorrow’: the world does not stay the same for even a moment. It is called ‘imperishable’ only because its flow never visibly ends and its root is eternal. The desire-driven rites of the Vedas are its leaves: they make it look lush and keep it growing, but give no fruit of lasting satisfaction. To know the tree is to know it as fleeting and expect no happiness from it; such a person is the real knower of the Vedas, even without studying them.
Step by step
- 1
The way to worship this peepal tree is to serve it without wanting any pleasure from it; for one who wants nothing, the world is God’s own form (7.19).
- 2
Once one sees that the world is perishing every moment, the wish to get pleasure from it drops.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe ocean and its waves
Countless waves rise on the ocean and tides come and go, yet the water stays the same. The world changes constantly on the surface, yet as God’s own expression nothing of it is lost.
The ox at the oil press
A long road ends somewhere, but a circular one never does. Like an ox going round an oil press, one who ties himself to the world goes round and round: dying after birth, and born after death.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींsocial media
An endless feed is all leaves: bright, always refreshing, never filling. Swamiji’s picture of a tree with beautiful leaves but no fruit describes looking for lasting satisfaction in what renews itself every second.
Why it matters
Chapter 15 opens here: seeing the world rightly is the first of its three subjects, and it clears the way for turning to the root, God.

Looked at closely, the world has no beginning, end or real standing; its firm-looking roots are cut with the strong weapon of non-attachment.
