English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

He who perfonns actions, dedicated to God and abandoning all attachment, is not tainted by sin, just as a lotus-leaf is not moistened by water.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

One who offers all actions to God and acts without attachment is not touched by sin, as a lotus leaf is not wetted by water.

What is Krishna saying?

After the karma-yogi (5.7) and the Sankhya-yogi (5.8–9), Krishna shows how the bhakti-yogi stays untouched by action. The body, senses, mind and life-breath all belong to God, so the devotee feels: all actions happen through the Lord and for the Lord; I am only an instrument. Swamiji adds a point about honesty: these things were given to us, are leaving us, and cannot be kept, changed or taken along — so calling them 'mine' is not honest; they should be recognised as His. Attachment is the root of desire, and desire the root of all sin; with attachment gone, the devotee lives in the world and does everything, yet stays untouched.

Step by step

  1. 1

The karma-yogi offers everything to the world, the jnana-yogi to prakriti, the bhakti-yogi to God — and since God is Lord of both, offering to Him is best.

  2. 2

Attachment is not only wanting a result; even crediting oneself with goodness while acting, or wanting to be called good, is attachment.

  3. 3

Every action has some flaw, as fire has smoke; but one who has given up hope, desire and attachment is not touched by those flaws.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The lotus leaf

A lotus leaf is born in water and lives in water, yet water does not cling to it. So the devotee, facing God, lives in the world and does all his work, yet the world does not cling to him.

work

You can work in a competitive, gossipy office without absorbing its games — if you treat your abilities as given to you for a purpose rather than as 'my brand' to protect.

Why it matters

It shows a third, gentle way to be free while acting: not by effort of discrimination but by honestly handing everything back to its Owner.

13.21

Attachment to the gunas drives rebirth

Only the self identified with the body becomes the enjoyer of the gunas, and attachment to them causes birth in higher and lower wombs.

2.62

The chain of fall begins in thought

Dwelling on objects breeds attachment; attachment breeds desire; and when desire is obstructed, anger arises.

3.37

Desire is the enemy

Desire, born of rajas, is what drives one to sin; blocked, it turns into anger. Insatiable and most sinful — know it as the enemy.
