Sadhaka-SanjivaniAll actions are performed, in all cases, by the modes of nature (prakrtl). He whose mind is beguiled by egoism thinks, "I am the doer."
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारAll actions are done by the gunas of prakriti; one whose mind is deluded by ego assumes, 'I am the doer.'
What is Krishna saying?
The same universal power that makes trees grow, rivers flow and buildings change also carries out our seeing, hearing and eating. Out of ignorance a person splits these into 'things that just happen' (digestion, growth) and 'things I do' (seeing, speaking), and claims the second group as his own. The ego is only a function of the inner instrument; the real self knows it. Mistaking that function for oneself — taking 'this' for 'I' — is what makes one 'deluded by ego'. Since this is an assumption we made, we can undo it by not accepting it, through discernment.
Step by step
- 1
The assumed ego is not removed by effort, because effort itself contains ego; it is removed by non-acceptance.
- 2
There are two 'I's: the real 'I am' (bare existence), which can be forgotten but never destroyed; and the assumed 'I am the body', which can appear but never last.
- 3
The moment one takes oneself to be the doer, one also becomes the enjoyer of the fruit — whoever is the doer is the one who reaps.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe wave and the ocean
A wave is of the same stuff as the ocean and has no existence apart from it. The body likewise belongs to the world and has no existence apart from it. We don't call the world 'I', yet by mistake we call the body 'I'.
Unlettered, then learned
An uneducated man says 'I am ignorant'; after study the same man says 'I am learned'. The assumed 'I' changed, but his existence — 'I am' — did not.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींidentity
'I'm a topper', 'I'm a failure', 'I'm a founder' — these labels keep changing; the one who is aware of each of them has stayed the same through all of them.
Why it matters
Bondage rests on one assumption — 'I am the doer'. Seeing that actions happen in prakriti loosens the root of both pride and anxiety about results.
