पुरुष
Purusha
puruṣa
In simple words
Purusha literally means 'person', but in Sankhya and Yoga it means pure awareness — the one who sees, as distinct from everything seen. The Gita also uses the word for the Supreme Person, God.
What is it?
The word has a long history. In the Rigveda's Purusha Sukta, a cosmic Person is the source of the world. In Sankhya, purusha is pure consciousness: inactive, unchanging and plural (one per being), which mistakenly identifies with the workings of prakriti. The Gita uses purusha both for the individual knower of the field and, as purushottama, for the Supreme Person beyond both the perishable and imperishable.
Scholar’s note
The Sankhya Karika argues for purusha's existence and plurality (e.g. from the fact that births and deaths are distributed individually). The relation of an inactive purusha to an unconscious prakriti ('the lame and the blind' analogy) is a noted problem. Vedanta critiques plurality and relocates the witness as the one Self; Vaishnava schools read purushottama theistically. How its meaning differs
Purushas are many, pure, inactive consciousnesses; bondage is the non-discrimination of purusha from prakriti, liberation is their isolation (kaivalya).
Purusha is the seer; the practice stills the mind so the seer can rest in its own nature. Ishvara is a special purusha.
Advaita accepts a pure witnessing consciousness but holds it is one, not many, and identical with Brahman.
The supreme Purusha (purushottama) is Narayana; individual selves are real and distinct but belong to Him.
In the Bhagavad Gita — as Sadhak Sanjivani explains it
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारBeing beginningless and free of the gunas, purusha is the imperishable Supreme Self; though in the body, it neither acts nor is touched (13.31). Swamiji draws the contrast: purusha is beginningless, the body has a beginning; purusha is beyond the gunas, the body is made of them; purusha is imperishable, the body perishes (13.31). Purusha becomes the 'enjoyer' of the gunas only when it takes the body as 'I' and 'mine' — like a driver who alone is punished for an accident because he connected himself with the car (13.21). It seems that bondage is natural and liberation must be earned, but in truth liberation is natural and bondage is made (13.31). Beyond the perishable and the imperishable is the Supreme Person, God, who enters and sustains the three worlds (15.17).
Where it appears in the Gita
This body is the field, and you are its knower
यह शरीर क्षेत्र है, इसे जाननेवाला क्षेत्रज्ञ
इदं
The body is ‘this’, something seen and always changing; the one who knows it is its knower, not the body itself.
13.21Attachment to the gunas drives rebirth
गुणोंका संग ही जन्मका कारण
पुरुष: प्रकृतिस्थो हि भुङ्क्ते प्रकृतिजान्गुणान्।
Only the self identified with the body becomes the enjoyer of the gunas, and attachment to them causes birth in higher and lower wombs.
15.7The soul is My own eternal part
जीव मेरा ही सनातन अंश है
ममैवांशो जीवलोके जीवभूत: सनातन:।
The self that has become the jiva is My eternal part, yet it draws to itself the mind and senses, which belong to prakriti.
