Chapter 13 · Verse 29

Prakriti does all the acting; see yourself as the non-doer

prakṛtyaiva ca karmāṇi kriyamāṇāni sarvaśaḥ।

yaḥ paśyati tathātmānamakartāraṃ sa paśyati॥ 29॥

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

He who seesthat all actions are performed onlyby nature (prakrtl), and that the self (atIna) is not the doer, he verily sees reality.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

One who sees every action as done by prakriti alone, and himself as the non-doer, sees truly.

What is Krishna saying?

The conscious reality is naturally changeless, even and at peace, while its power, prakriti, is naturally always active; even in dissolution a subtle activity continues. Eating, walking, sleeping, thinking, even entering samadhi all happen through prakriti, not through the self, in which no action ever takes place. When the self links itself to this active prakriti, the body’s natural actions seem to be its own. Seeing clearly that they are not gives the experience of non-doership. Whether the Gita says prakriti, the gunas or the senses do the acting, it is the same point.

  1. 1

Swamiji: there are two ways out of the union of field and knower. Verses 27–28 recognise the relation with God; verses 29–30 break the assumed relation with prakriti.

  2. 2

Prakriti is never inactive even slightly, and the self never acts even slightly.

The sun’s unbroken motion

From sunrise light grows till noon and fades till sunset; darkness grows till midnight and fades till dawn. Light and dark never stop changing. Prakriti is the same: through creation and dissolution alike, its activity goes on without a break.

stress

Your heart races before an interview, your thoughts spin at 2 a.m. These are movements of prakriti, like weather. The verse invites you to watch them happen instead of saying ‘I am doing this’ or ‘I am this’.

Why it matters

Doership is the knot that makes action bind. Seeing every action as prakriti’s work loosens that knot at its root.

3.27

Nature acts — the deluded ego says "I am the doer"

All actions are done by the gunas of prakriti; one whose mind is deluded by ego assumes, 'I am the doer.'

14.19

No doer but the gunas, and oneself beyond them

When the discerning person sees no doer other than the gunas and knows himself to be beyond them, he attains My being.
