Attachment to the gunas drives rebirth

puruṣaḥ prakṛtistho hi bhuṅkte prakṛtijānguṇān।

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

When the spirit (purusa) seated in matter (prakrti) enjoys the modes born of prakrtl (matter), attachment to the modes becomes the cause of its birth, in good and evil bodies.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Only the self identified with the body becomes the enjoyer of the gunas, and attachment to them causes birth in higher and lower wombs.

What is Krishna saying?

The self is not really seated in prakriti. It is called ‘seated in prakriti’ only when it identifies with the body as ‘I’ and ‘mine’. Such a self takes favourable and unfavourable situations as pleasure and pain, and becomes happy or sad; this is what enjoying the gunas means. Relating to things, people and actions is ‘attachment to the gunas’, and it is the cause of birth and death. If the self does not take the body as its own and stays in itself, it never becomes the enjoyer of pleasure and pain but stays even in both. Bondage is unnatural to it; freedom is its nature.

Step by step

  1. 1

Everyone knows that pleasures and pains come and go while they themselves remain; attachment to pleasure and fear of pain keep this discernment from working.

  2. 2

The ‘I’ is inert and the ‘am’ is conscious; doership and enjoyership live only in the knot ‘I am’. Swamiji’s advice: take your stand on ‘is’, not ‘am’.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The car and the driver

In a road accident both the car and the driver are involved. The car did the moving, but the penalty falls on the driver who is connected to it. In the same way the body does the acting, but the self that has linked itself to the body reaps pleasure and pain.

exams

Two students get the same low grade. One is crushed and the other shrugs. The grade came from outside; the suffering came from how tightly each one tied ‘I’ to the result.

Why it matters

It puts the cause of suffering and rebirth where we can do something about it: in our assumed relation with the body and the gunas, not in the gunas themselves.
