Chapter 2 · Verse 67

One sense, one mind, and the boat is blown off course

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Just as the wind sails a ship on water, the mind that yields to one of the wandering senses, takes away the discrimination of man.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

When the mind follows even one wandering sense, it carries away the intellect, as wind carries away a boat on water.

What is Krishna saying?

This explains why the undisciplined lacks a resolute intellect. In daily activity the senses meet their objects. Whichever sense develops attachment to its object draws the mind along; the mind begins to relish that object and its importance settles in. Then that mind alone steals the intellect: devotion to duty gives way to an enjoyment-mindset, and the resolve 'I must attain God' is lost. Describing it takes time, but the intellect is shaken in an instant.

Step by step

  1. 1

The senses carry off the mind (2.60), and the mind carries off the intellect (here); the mind is the main agent in stealing the intellect.

  2. 2

Without the mind's presence, a sense does not even register its object — so a sense alone cannot steal the intellect.

  3. 3

For one whose mind and senses are controlled, the mind does not disturb the intellect but helps carry it to God.

The boat and the wind

A person crossing a river or sea by boat is heading for his destination; a contrary wind drives the boat the other way. So the seeker, sailing toward God on the boat of a resolute intellect, is turned back toward the world when one sense makes the mind its follower.

The skilled boatman

Wind can throw a boat off course or sink it, but a skilled boatman turns the wind to his advantage so that it helps him reach his goal. Likewise, for one with mind and senses under control, the mind becomes a help toward God.

A tasty dish

While eating, a particular taste appears and the sense of taste becomes attached to it; it then pulls the mind along, and the mind becomes pleased and absorbed in that flavour.

The absorbed arrow-maker

Dattatreya tells of an arrow-maker so absorbed in his work that a king's whole procession passed right by him and he did not notice. His ears and the sound were both there, but without the mind the sense registered nothing — showing that the mind, not the sense, is what steals the intellect.

exams

One notification catches your eye, the mind follows it, and an hour of study planning is gone. It took just one sense and one moment.

Why it matters

It shows how quickly one unguarded sense can overturn a firm resolve, and that a controlled mind can instead become an ally.
