Chapter 2 · Verse 66

No steadiness, no peace; no peace, no happiness

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

He, who has not controlled his mind and senses, can have no determinate intellect; nor can such an undisciplined man have a sense of duty. A man without having a sense of duty, can have- no peace; and how can there be happiness, for one lacking peace?

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The undisciplined has no resolute intellect and no selfless attitude; without that there is no peace, and without peace, how can there be happiness?

What is Krishna saying?

This verse confirms the previous two from the opposite side. One whose mind and senses are not restrained lacks the single resolve 'I only have to attain God', because he is caught in perishable pleasures and possessions — now wanting honour, now comfort, now money. Without such resolve, he cannot hold the attitude 'I only have to do my duty and give up desire for fruit'. Without devotion to duty there is no peace, and one who is not at peace has constant turmoil inside; however many favourable things come from outside, that turmoil cannot end.

Step by step

  1. 1

The sequence: no restraint → no resolute intellect → no selfless attitude of duty → no peace → no happiness.

  2. 2

If one's sense of identity changes to 'I am a seeker; practice is my work', the mind and senses come under control by themselves.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Anyone who neglects their own duty

Whether a monk, a teacher, or a person of any social role — if they are not devoted to their own duty, they find no peace, because unrest comes from lack of firmness in doing one's duty.

comparison

Chasing a new goal each week — status one day, comfort the next, money after that — leaves no single direction, and restlessness follows however much you get.

Why it matters

It shows that happiness depends on peace, and peace on a firm aim and devotion to duty, not on outer gains.

2.41

One firm resolve, or endless scattered minds

The resolute intellect aimed at God is one; the minds of those driven by desires are endless, and each branches endlessly.

2.64

Moving among objects, free of like and dislike

The self-controlled seeker, moving among objects with senses under control and free of attraction and aversion, attains inner clarity.

2.65

In inner clarity, all sorrow ends

When inner clarity comes, all sorrows end, and the intellect of one with a clear mind quickly becomes steady in God.
