The Self is a wonder — seen, spoken of and heard as a marvel

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

One perceives the soul as a wonder, some speak of it an amazement while others hear of it in wonderment; while none knows it even after hearing of it.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Someone sees the Self as a wonder, another speaks of it as a wonder, another hears of it so, yet hearing alone no one knows it.

What is Krishna saying?

Swamiji explains why knowing the Self is a 'wonder': other things are known as objects ('this'), through senses, mind and intellect, but the Self is known only by itself. There is no triad of seer, seen and seeing here, just as the knowledge 'I am' needs no instrument or proof. Describing it is also a wonder, because speech is lit up by the Self and can only point toward it. And hearing alone cannot give the knowledge; after hearing, one must oneself become established in it, and then one knows oneself by oneself.

Step by step

  1. 1

Knowing the Self is not hard or rare; what is lacking is people who sincerely want to know it.

  2. 2

The gross, subtle and causal bodies change or are known, so none of them is my real nature.

  3. 3

Hearing with faith helps, but the final realisation needs no instrument — the Self knows itself by itself.

  4. 4

If the teacher is realised and the listener full of faith and longing, knowledge can come at once.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The lamp needs no other lamp

To fetch something from a dark room we need both light and eyes. But to see a burning lamp we need no second lamp, because it is self-luminous. The Self is like that: it needs no other light to know itself.

Pointing at the moon through a branch

A realised person who describes the Self does it like showing the moon by way of a branch: speech only points, so that the listener's attention turns that way.

Marriage is not by hearing

A marriage does not happen by hearing about it; it happens when two people accept each other as husband and wife. Likewise, hearing alone lets one learn, repeat and lecture on the truth, but it is known only when one accepts it and becomes established in it.

learning

You can watch every video about swimming and explain strokes perfectly, and still not swim until you get into the water. Swamiji's point: hearing prepares, but knowing the Self means standing in it yourself.

Why it matters

It warns against mistaking spiritual information for realisation, and it removes the excuse that the truth is too rare or hard to reach.
