What is Krishna saying?

This verse concludes the section from verse 11 to 30 on the body and its dweller. Swamiji notes that 'avadhya' can mean 'should not be killed' or 'cannot be killed'; here it means the latter — no one can destroy the Self. He explains that the whole section is meant to separate the Self from the body, because without this discrimination no path of karma, jnana or bhakti can be practised. Krishna deliberately uses plain words like body and embodied, not philosophical terms, so that this becomes a matter of experience for every person rather than a subject of study.

Step by step

  1. 1

The body changes and the one who knows its changes does not; the changing and the unchanging can never be one.

  2. 2

The root bondage is taking the body as 'I', 'mine' and 'for me'; until that goes, even great practices do not fully free us.

  3. 3

The key for a seeker is to let go of what one already knows to be unreal.

  4. 4

The body will leave us anyway; what difficulty is there in letting go of it ourselves?

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The cow is 'avadhya' in a different sense

A cow is called avadhya meaning it must never be killed, because that is a great sin. The Self is avadhya in the other sense: it simply cannot be killed by anyone in any way.

The writer and the pen

A writer picks up the pen when he sits down to write and puts it back when he is done. A seeker should likewise take up the body while doing work and set it aside, unattached, as soon as the work is over.

work

A laptop is essential for the job, but you close it at the end of the day and don't think you are the laptop. Swamiji asks us to relate to the body the same way: a tool for serving, not our identity.

Why it matters

Swamiji calls this discrimination the foundation of every path; the Gita begins its teaching here to cut the body-relationship at the root.
