Chapter 2 · Verse 28

Unmanifest before, unmanifest after — why lament?

avyaktādīni bhūtāni vyaktamadhyāni bhārata।

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

O Bharata (Arjuna), all beings were imperceptible before they were born and will become so again when they are dead; they are perceptible only in the intermediate stage. Why then the lamentation?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Beings are unmanifest before birth and after death, and appear only in between; what is there to lament?

What is Krishna saying?

After the 'even if' argument, Krishna speaks from a plain, everyday view. Every body we see, hear or know was not visible before birth and will not be after death; it only appears in between. Swamiji states the principle: what is absent at the beginning and the end is absent in the middle too. Bodies are therefore always non-existent, while the Self existed before and will exist after, so it exists in the middle too. Neither gives reason for grief.

Step by step

  1. 1

Even while bodies appear to exist in the middle, they are in fact passing away every moment.

  2. 2

The 'is-not' of the body (asat) is constant, and the 'is' of the Self (sat) is constant.

  3. 3

We are always separate from the unreal and always united with the real.

The dream

Before falling asleep there was no dream, and on waking there is none. Bodies are the same: absent before, absent after, and only seeming to exist in between.

Why it matters

It gives a simple test for what is real: whatever was not there before and will not be there after cannot be clung to as lasting.
