English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Among thousands of men, hardly one, strives for perfection and of those who do, scarcely one, knows Me in essence.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

God is not hard to reach; what is rare is a person who wants Him with real, undivided longing.

What is Krishna saying?

Having promised in 7.2 to tell knowledge together with realisation, Krishna explains why so few actually come to know it. Among thousands of people, hardly one strives for the real perfection — attaining God — and among those who have attained perfection, hardly one knows Him in His entirety. Swamiji stresses that this verse is not about the difficulty of the Truth. People get caught in enjoyment and accumulation, drawn by pleasure that shows only at the start, and they keep postponing God to the future. The rare thing is intense longing; once that longing is there, the responsibility of making oneself known falls on God.

Step by step

  1. 1

The obstacle is being pulled toward enjoyment and accumulation, whose pleasure shows only at the beginning.

  2. 2

Hoping to reach God 'some day in the future' is itself a main reason people do not reach Him — He is present here and now.

  3. 3

Even liberated seekers may not know the entire (samagra) form of God; that is known only through supreme devotion and His grace.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The cow licking her calf

When a cow licks her calf lovingly while feeding it, the calf thrives in a way that milk alone could not give. In the same way, the knowledge that comes through God's grace is of a different kind from what our own reasoning produces.

God is not a tree you plant and wait for

A tree is sown today and bears fruit years later. God is not like that: He is already fully present in every place, time, thing and situation, so there is no waiting built into reaching Him.

procrastination

Like saying 'I'll get serious about what matters once life settles down' — the postponing itself is what keeps it from ever happening.

Why it matters

It moves the problem from 'God is too hard' to 'do I really want Him?', which is something fully in our hands.
